Angsbacka highlights the 5 dimensions of Sustainability during the European Day of the Sustainable Communities

Ängsbacka is celebrating the European Day of the Sustainable Communities for the first time, on Saturday 22 September 2018, in Sweden. You are invited!

This day is an opportunity to showcase how Ängsbacka’s community hits the 5 dimensions of sustainability – social, culture, economy, ecology and whole system design – and open its doors to a wider public.

Ängsbacka highlights the 5 dimensions of sustainability

Ängsbacka is the largest ecovillage creating festivals for personal growth education in Europe. For more than 20 years, the community has been arranging transformational events in abundance aiming to build a strong and sustainable new social culture in the direction of environmental friendliness.

200 people live all year in or around Ängsbacka in Sweden’s deep forests

About 40 volunteers and staff live in the principal property of nearly 10 hectares. A group which expands to 200 – 300 in the summer festival season that can host up to 1 000 people. An extended eco-community is blossoming in the neighbourhood functioning more and more as a conscious cooperative.

A life beyond thoughts and concepts

Personal growth is a the heart of Ängsbacka’s daily activities celebrating life through art, dancing, yoga or tantra. The members have time for sharing every week. Like a family, they gather to speak from their hearts and be honest with their needs with Non-Violent Communication.

We are aware that the current system is not sustainable. The change starts by changing ourselves. More and more we grow organic food, we share our goods and clothes. A holistic school has just opened for children from 1 to 16 years old with a focus on free education, yoga, Non-Violent Communication, arts and connection with nature. A free solidarity shop and a pop-up market is held at the Ängsbacka’s café. A cultural center in the community offers free sunday activities like yoga or dance. We also have a sauna and gather for other spontaneous meetings.

As a host of events that gather thousands of people from all over the world, like the Global Ecovillage Network Conference, and as the creator of the biggest Tantra Festival in the world and with its main alternative festival No Mind, Ängsbacka’s wealthy and wide experience strongly fulfills the social, cultural and economic dimensions of the ecovillage movement.

A new plan to develop permaculture

Ängsbacka’s vision is to be a leading meeting place in the world and grow to become more environmental-friendly: moving towards renewable energies, growing food and developing soil through organic agriculture and starting an eco-building project in the Forest Dream for people that want to live longer in the center of Ängsbacka.

The community embrace low-impact lifestyles: using natural products, buying second hand, working and consuming less and taking the time to reconnect to nature and the biodiversity, exploring the wild edible forest growing around Ängsbacka’s strawbale house.

Join Ängsbacka as a long-term volunteer!

Ängsbacka is currently building a new learning program for volunteers that want to live longer in its transformational spaces, with a particular focus on collaboration with the kitchen, garden and housekeeping teams while enjoying the diverse activities offered by the community.
