Permalab in Portugal: a “laboratory” in permaculture and new forms of relationships

Permalab is a collective of nomads living in the Alentejo region in Portugal, a few minutes away from the town of Odemira. The community has been hosting “laboratories” on permaculture and personal development since 2015.

It is a family-friendly space, open to all ages.

Non-violent communication, empathetic listing, the freedom to share your feelings, talking in groups, conflict resolution, family constellations: numerous themes are presented by community members each week.

From theory into practice

Courses are then put into practice in this welcoming 7-acre site in the middle of the unspoilt countryside: ideal for broaching in depth and in complete trust otherwise taboo and conflicting subjects such as relationships, family issues, love and even sexuality.

The residents live in traditional Portuguese houses and are currently constructing new eco-buildings such as cabins and eco-domes.

Situated a few minutes from Pego das Pias, which is famous for its natural pools and ideal for swimming.

In this region of Portugal, the alternative movement is blossoming. The communities are working together to fulfil their large-scale permaculture projects. For example, a free education network is being organised around Tamera and A Quinta.

Soon, the Permalab collective will build a children’s play area.
