30 Ecovillage Principles Illustrated by Communities Around the World

30 Ecovillage Principles Illustrated by Communities Around the World

Part Two of the book Regeneration: Living in an Ecovillage

How can we reinvent the way we live on Earth in the face of climate, ecological, and social challenges? Regeneration: Living in an Ecovillage explores the answers emerging from thousands of communities around the world that are experimenting with ways of life rooted in cooperation, sufficiency, and regeneration. Blending history, personal stories, practical tools, and future-oriented thinking, the book offers an immersive journey into a rapidly growing movement and invites readers to imagine the resilient communities of tomorrow.

The Sustainability Mandala brings together 30 foundational principles, organized into five complementary dimensions, providing a practical roadmap for designing and developing an ecovillage. Developed by the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) and Gaia Education, it is the result of decades of experimentation, research, and shared learning across communities worldwide.

These principles distill the lessons learned from thousands of local initiatives, as well as ongoing work in resilience, sustainability, participatory governance, and whole-systems design.

In this second part of the book, each of the 30 principles is illustrated through real-life examples drawn from ecovillages in different countries. Organized according to the five dimensions of the Sustainability Mandala—Social, Cultural, Ecological, Economic, and Whole Systems Design—they demonstrate how communities are putting regenerative solutions into practice in response to the challenges of our time.

Although these principles originated within the ecovillage movement, they are relevant to everyone. They can inspire personal action, strengthen organizations, guide collaborative projects, or support the creation of new communities. More than a methodology, they offer an invitation to rethink how we live, how we cooperate, and how we care for one another and the living world.
