GEN Europe launches world’s largest community celebration marking 25 years of networking in Germany

The world’s largest celebration of ecovillages and community living – the European Ecovillage Gathering – launches today, under the theme of Beyond Climate Crisis: Transforming Ourselves, Transforming the System.

800 participants from around the world will gather in Nature Community ecovillage, Germany, from July 28-31 2020 to celebrate 25 years of the Global Ecovillage Network.

The event programme will feature keynote conversations with leading thinkers and activists from across the global sustainability sector; hands-on, practical workshops; a health and wellbeing area; the Ecovillage Sustainable Technology Expo; and a children’s programme, as well as arts, music, film, dance and celebration.

The event, now in its 25th year, attracts hundreds of people every year to an ecovillage in Europe. In 2020, it aims to inspire concrete action to face the climate crisis drawing on decades of experience from ecovillages, as well as allied movements. Participants from Extinction Rebellion, Transition Towns, ECOLISE and many more will offer workshops, talks and activities over a four-day programme in Nature Community, a former Bavarian hunting lodge turned vegan ecovillage.

Managing Director of GEN Europe, Genny Carraro, said “We are in the midst of crisis of climate and consciousness, and the old ways of being, thinking and doing no longer serve us. Now more than ever we need practical examples of regenerative living that can work at all scales, and ecovillages are living laboratories that showcase precisely that. We want to use the Gathering as a chance to share the tools and knowledge developed by ecovillages, and collaborate with allied movements to decisively confront the climate crisis with community-led action .”
