Nyim in Hungary: how to create an ecovillage hand in hand with a traditional village
Nyim is a small, traditional village in Hungary situated about one hour from Budapest. In 2010, an eco-community began to develop eco-projects in the area and these projects have since managed to repopulate its surroundings. Today, around 15 of its members lead the eco-projects in the region, hand in hand with the local government.
From scientists to jugglers, economists to publishers, and even some physiotherapists, the members of Nyim eco-community come from all walks of life. However, they all share the aspiration to house 20 families in a sustainable, eco-friendly manner, whilst respecting the surrounding environment.
As well as several houses in the near-by village, the members of Nyim have bought a 26-hectare plot of land for this eco-village which is being developed according to the principles of permaculture (the development of agriculture ecosystems intending to be sustainable and self-sufficient).
A large vegetable garden, a community centre, wooden tents and huts, and even a sauna, are all on the programme for this eco-village.
Nyim is open to new members who wish to invest in opening a micro-eco-business in the region.
