Biofalu Máriahalom in Hungary: 20 years of experimentation in eco-construction
Biofalu Mariahalom is an ecovillage in the north of Hungary, just one hour from Budapest.
The story of this ecovillage started about 20 years ago when Géza Lakatos, a now 61-year-old Hungarian, obtained a 50-hectare plot of land with the aim of living in a more ecologically friendly way with his family, and to protect monoculture (the cultivation of a single crop in a given area).
Since then, more than fifteen eco-buildings have been constructed through experimentation with different techniques and materials, surrounded by a forest which is home to a wide range of plants and animals, creating a great bio-diversity.
Open to new residents
Four houses are entirely finished and are ready to welcome new residents.
At the moment, the main activities of Biofalu consist of running events, such as workshops or retreats, welcoming up to 100 people.
In the future, Biofalu wishes to develop educational activities with volunteers.
